David Berger

Is there anything more surreal than life? Probably not! And, this is the reason why I have chosen the surrealist perspective to express myself, like the infamous Dali and others that are less known such as Bruvel, Schimmel, as well as the humorous perspective of Roller Wilson and the mathematical perfection of MC Escher.

My paintings are a unique attempt at the blending of the conscious, unconscious, mental, emotional, and spiritual essences of our being, the juxtaposition of images familiar, random or otherwise of the infinite universe mashed together in the finite space of the canvas.

Life is all about feelings and perspectives; the depth of pain and the heights of elation and the myriad that lies between, be it in the real muck and mire of earth or the chaos which inhabits the untrained mind.

For me, life is all about growing, healing, and recapturing the awe that was lost in childhood, and my hope is that my images will reignite some of that awe within the viewer.

ARTISTS BIO:

David was born in Hoboken, NJ in 1954. Raised by a mother that fought her own demons, which visited themselves upon her three boys on a regular basis, and was disciplined by a heavy-handed father, life was colorful, to say the least! The family moved extensively in his formative years and finally resettled in NJ in 1969. Being the smallest in his junior and high school years he understood that escaping into the world of art helped relieve some of the pressures doled out to him from home and school.

David spent the mid-seventies in Santa Cruz California and enjoyed that decade with great vim and vigor as did most of that consciousness. After eliminating all those substances from his regular diet, he crashed into a deep and severe depression that couldn’t be “labeled” which lasted almost twenty years. During this time he finished a small body of statement paintings dealing with endangered species and the planet.

His painting got set on the back burner for the most part, but the creative juice found its way back in through various art classes and eventually segued into writing. Those writings are about his own observations, struggles, and triumphs over depression and all of the patterns and behaviors that people go through with their personal emotions, and how they affect and infect all relationships. He became a healing facilitator and assisted those struggling as he did through the nineties to the present.

Now in 2022, the brushes are once again in hand. Leaving AZ for the last 20 years he has landed in Florida with his wife Lisa.

Bill and Jon Slade

Handblown glass artwork by Bill and Jon Slade featuring their unique and one-of-a-kind layering technique that produces a dynamic, colorful piece with silver lacing design within the sculpture. This father and son team is based in Jacksonville, Florida.

More on their Artistic Process:

Bill Slade is both an artist and chemist when he creates his exquisitely beautiful paperweights and sculptures. To achieve this degree of total control, he must prepare each batch of formula by hand, carefully measuring and weighing all the dry ingredients. He then loads the formula into the roaring furnace, which is kept at 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. It is slowly melted down overnight, becoming pure crystal by the following morning.

Bill Slade then begins what he describes as his “Dance of Fire”. He gathers up the molten glass on the end of a long rod, one layer upon another. After every gathering of molten glass, Bill manipulates it with hand tools to create an ethereal design before encasing it in another layer of Silver-Veiled Glass. Some of his works have up to ten layers of glass (each with its own internal design) before he is ready to create the exterior shape. During this entire process, he must keep the glass molten by repeatedly going back to the furnace, for if it becomes too cool, he can no longer shape it and achieve his designs. At the same time, if the glass is overheated, it becomes too loose and will run off the pipe onto the floor.

An Artist's Statement:
"I was an observer from the time I can remember. I was intrigued at the time by several questions, and I still am to this day: "Why do people do what they do?" What spurs their activities and responses? Why do people "tick"? These deeply empathetic connections are sensitive glimpses, whether it is an elderly woman's feeling of isolation, the outsider's anxiety when courting a new friend, the conflicting joy and sadness of the surrogate mother, or the lives of those who have passed away that have not been forgotten. These glimpses open a small window through which I also look inside my own emotional life while I assume the observer's perspective.

Adolfo Girala Gallery 500

Mixed media paint is applied in layers to canvas in Adolfo Girala's artwork to create a textural abstract pattern with a single, unified design.

An Artist's Statement:

Being an artist has been both a blessing and a challenge for me. My soul is driven by passion and the desire to make something beautiful and one-of-a-kind. I get completely lost in my work, which is always an adventure and an exploration that hasn't been done before.

To become an artist, you must learn to let go of who you are and explore your own inner world. You must let this inner world lead, motivate, and perform the work for you. You become a tool for the same creative force that made everything. You must learn to rely on and trust your own inner teacher.

I feel compelled and obligated as an artist to care for our planet, to forgive, to love, to always learn, and to appreciate and respect the sacredness of all living things.

My craftsmanship is a portrayal of excellence, quietness, and secret.

Biography of Artist:

I was born in September 1962 in Havana, Cuba. The beach was a fun place to spend my childhood. Those days appeared to be so blissful. The Caribbean Sea is breathtaking. My most treasured memories are of the endless days of sunshine and cool breezes. My work is still influenced by the vibrant and alive colors of this Caribbean island. My family and I were subjected to constant harassment as a result of our non-participation in the communist party during the Cuban revolution. The years I spent in school were filled with anxiety and fear. Eventually, we were permitted to leave the island in fishing boats during the Mariel exodus in 1980. I'm a U. S. resident now and I have lived in Los Angeles since my appearance in the US.

Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11 to 4.

Daughter and mother artists, Carrie and Renata, previously enjoyed owning a local art gallery, furniture, and decor store in Dallas, TX for 14 years. However, they’d always wanted to live near the beach, so they closed up shop to make that dream come true in beautiful Ormond by the Sea, FL. Two years later, with toes in the sand, they chatted about how much they missed running a creative business together and decided to happily dive in once again ... this time in Ormond Beach! Getting to reopen a small business together while supporting local artists, fulfilling their own creative passions, and being a part of the community is a joyride for them. They’re the perfect team with Renata’s background as an interior designer and design firm owner and Carrie’s years of experience in advertising and marketing.

So ... they cleverly combined the words art and unique, and ARTique was born in April of 2021!

Daytona Beach Artist Barry Kite

After receiving his B.F.A. in film from UCLA, Chicago-born Barry Kite spent the next five years traveling overseas. Returning to the San Francisco Bay area, he wrote and performed his own style of surreal poetry in local coffee houses. Renewing his interest in collage, he combined photographic and hand-coloring techniques to create the foundation of his current work.

Barry Kite’s style of social and political parody via the “re-positioning” of art historical and contemporary media imagery has won him several art competition awards and placed his work in numerous private and corporate collections.

My work is based on found iconographic imagery from painting, photography and popular media initially via discarded books and magazines but of late: the internet. This imagery is deconstructed, then re-composed from different sources as parody with the important blending of and interpretive tension of word (via title) and image. The technique is based on using imagery as language to build context as individual words are combined to create ideas. Uncommon juxtapositions and themes are sought to provoke thought and discussion. The less common, the merrier. A little art literacy is helpful, as many implied narratives draw on historic reactions and interpretations of various employed artists and works from their own era. Prior history with a certain painting or photograph always colors one’s interpretation. Being aware of the fact that an artist went blind or crazy or bankrupt (you know who you are) during his productive  period, or that a work was once critically excoriated always adds a certain flavor. My works are narratives.

Arts on Douglas Fine Art

Arts on Douglas Fine Art

  • Address: 123 Douglas Street, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168
  • Phone: (386) 428-1133
  • Arts on Douglas was established in 1996 by artist and Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) founder, Doris Leeper and, artist/benefactor, Ed Harris. Originally conceived as a commercial gallery to promote the work and careers of professional artists from the state of Florida, the gallery has since formalized its affiliation with Atlantic Center for the Arts, combining missions, resources and programs, in order to further facilitate community engagement with the creative arts.

Located in historic downtown New Smyrna Beach, the building was formerly a used furniture warehouse, and originally a 1920s era Ford showroom and service center. The building was transformed into a 3,500 square foot exhibition space that presents 18 exhibitions a year. The gallery's ongoing exhibition program features a broad spectrum of artistic styles, media and temperaments, including experimental genres in its newest addition, the alt_space.

Located within Arts on Douglas, the alt_space gallery is an exhibition space dedicated to Florida artists from various contemporary genres including: conceptual art, site specific installation, new media, digital media, video, sculpture, or other experimental practices. The space was conceived in order to provide emerging and established visual artists with an alternative space to show their work, as well as to provide a platform to engage the community in a dialogue about art process, methodology, concepts, and materials.
