Deborah Smith Daytona Beach Artist
Award winning, Central Florida artist Deborah B. Smith reveals her perspective on the world through her vivid, impressionism paintings. Smith’s love for art was nurtured at a young age when she was fortunate to have lived in Taranto, Italy. The culture and breathtaking art of Florence and Paris has ultimately influenced her current themes and style of painting and use of the acrylic medium. She has incorporated hints of the old masters in the use of lighting effects and themes in her work.
Deborah received great recognition for her art as a child. She has won prestigious awards including Best of Show and 1st place for sculpture and painting throughout her career. Her work entitled "Broken Vessel" won 3rd place in the painting category at the Osceola Center for the Arts. Her award winning painting "Cello" was chosen by Kirkland's Home Stores to be reproduced and sold throughout the USA. It ranked in the top 5 of their national "The Next Great American Artist" contest.
"I love to create works that have mood, rich color and the dramatic illusion of light in them," said Deborah B. Smith. "Painting is my passion. The acrylic medium allows me to create unique themes that portray an ethereal atmosphere."
Smith has devoted her life to being an artist and today her paintings are widely collected. Her work "Shalom" was collected by Brigadier General Gal Hirsch of the International Institute for Counter Terrorism, and now hangs in a private collection in Israel. Smith also won 3rd place for her mixed media piece called "Letters of Love" at the Scan Design 5th Annual Fall in Furniture Love Contest.

EXPRESSIVE COLORS OF MARIANNA HAMILTON ROSS
Early exposure to the lush colors in her parents' California gardens underlies her love of Nature's strength and beauty now found in the Florida landscape. Botanicals, gardens, forests, and irregular tree forms of the Southeast combine with emerging/hidden figures in her transparent watercolor paintings and luminous colors of dyes on silk.
Marianna received an MFA in Painting from the University of Arizona, a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute, and a BA in Art from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Important influences were her teachers, Richard Diebenkorn, Jack Beal and Sondra Freckelton in composition, as well as travel to Papua New Guinea, Indonesian batik factories,Italy, Mexico, and Peru.

My work is truly mixed media, involving many processes and including a number of types of water-soluble media. I begin by creating a collection of painted, printed, and chemically altered papers. It's a slow and beautiful undertaking, always filled with surprises and discoveries. I often incorporate found papers from my repository of family archives—a piece of music, a letter, a page from an old ledger. It's important to me to include the voices and essence of those who came before me. The paper that I create and incorporate forms the foundation of my design. I craft each piece in layers, freely combining and adding paint, watercolor dyes, watercolor pencils, sumi and gel inks, gloss varnish, and other media to develop richness, depth and glow. Lately, I have been incorporating pen and ink as the final layer in my work. The evolution of each piece is a slow process requiring a certain brand of meditative Zen. My art is all about letting the process unfold. It cannot be hurried.
Though I always have a dedicated point of departure--a sketch, a dream, an event, my environment, a piece of literature--each work inevitably begins to take on a life of its own. The process is a bit like beginning to write a story, then standing back in wonder as the story continues to write itself, inserting unanticipated twists and turns and details that offer additional layers of richness and complexity and meaning. I love that part of the process—that feeling of working with the piece, and not simply on the piece. There are times that I have to wait for the next part of the story to reveal itself. Sometimes, the road ahead is so clear and intricately defined that I can’t get it down on paper fast enough.
I will always believe that the magic of art lies in its ability to form a kinship between the viewer and the artist. In that spark of connection, two worlds and perspectives merge. The artist reaches across time and tells her story. The viewer makes fresh interpretations, discovers intricate details, layers their own culture, values, life experiences over the image. A richer story is born, a new voice heard. Each piece of art ultimately becomes a never-ending story.

My paintings for the last 10 years generally fall into two bodies of work. The first stems from an interest in the complex ecosystems found in the southeast. The resulting paintings are compositions involve some drawing skill, and creating illusions of light and atmosphere while solving structural issues of balance, movement, texture, etc. I see the painting process as an opportunity to make visible the ideas, based on the natural world, that take shape in my mind.
The second body of work is more narrative. Where there are indications of the human presence, a story will develop around lawn sculptures, chickens, or icebergs. The topic is limitless, and the sense of a planet in crisis is always present.
I was born, raised and educated in Virginia, and had a fairly well-rounded upbringing.
I lived and studied Art near Washington D.C, and in Richmond Va., graduating with a degree in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. I then moved to San Francisco where I was a curator and board member of a non-profit alternative art space, while working in commercial art galleries and as apicture framer for those galleries. I then studied at San Francisco State University, earning an MFA in painting. At this point I had been living in San Francisco for thirteen years, and had the opportunity to move back east.
After moving to Florida 25 years ago, I soon began teaching art at Daytona Beach Community College, where I worked for 9 ½ years. Within a few years I also became a teacher for Volusia county Schools. I began the current phase of my artistic production in 2010, and renewed exhibiting my work. All of the work in my current portfolio is from 2011-2022. I retired from teaching at the end of 2017 in order to produce art full-time.
Born in Paris, France, Eliza lived in Belgium, Egypt, and India before settling in Central Florida. She earned a dual degree in Studio/Fine Art and Graphic Design and worked in the offset printing field and as a freelance designer.
Inspired by her museum visits as a child to the Louvre and the Grand Palais, and by the works of Berthe Morisot, Pierre Bonnard and Edgar Degas, she brings a uniquely French talent and enthusiasm to her imagery.
Largely self-taught, she depicts human portraiture in oils or in charcoal and pastel in a traditional realist manner. Her portraits sensitively capture the sitter’s personality and evoke their story.
Eliza is a member of the Portrait Society of America; she exhibits her artworks with the Women Artists Group (WAG), the Florida Women's Arts Association (FLWAA), and at the Art League of Daytona.
My sculptural work in Earthenware clay continues to build in size, flourish with color and spark interest when examined from every angle. I react to textures in nature, cloud formations, movement of water and responses to wind and light. Clay slabs are draped, bent, stretched and broken, then assembled to design a labyrinth of shapes that are left raw or brushed with a range of color. Some structures become utilitarian when I form a lid, creating an abstract box.
Understanding the reaction of my glazes to the heat of the kiln is another important aspect of my art. Glazes flow, craze and crackle to produce unusual surfaces and hues. My appreciation of nature’s own beauty is reflected by embellishing pieces with authentic gems and minerals such as amethyst, citrine or pyrite.
Clay is blended earth that allows me to create freely and share my artistic self. When tracking my journey, the graph creates a visual mountain range that inspires me to continue the climb.
Nancy was employed at Bennington Pottery in management after graduating. She moved on to teaching in various educational programs, both public and private in the New York area. While raising her two children, she established a studio and worked on commissions for the College of New Rochelle and private clients while working in the retail trade for more than ten years. In 2013 Nancy and her husband retired and moved to Ormond Beach where she has pursued sculpture and continued work on the potter's wheel.
It is an honor for Nancy to be a member of Beaux Arts of Central Florida and Florida Women's Art Association.

Daytona Beach Artist Maggie Mejia
I never went to school for art, and I was always in awe of those who had “the gift” that enabled them to create. For years I felt the creativity inside me, but it would only come out in short unpredictable bursts. I never made the space for it.
That changed around 2014 when I created a studio inside my garage and started making art on a more regular basis. Through the use of unconventional materials, my understanding of creativity and art began to shift and expand.
I realized that I don’t need an art degree to be an artist. I don’t need a collection of expensive art supplies to validate my creative voice.
Each piece that I create goes through so many incarnations: it can be awkward and uncomfortable, then euphoric and exhilarating, or disappointing and unbearable.
Learning how to move through these phases gracefully is not unlike my life outside the canvas.
My hope is that, in looking at my art, you are moved in the same way I have been during the creation of each of these works. If any of them tug on you, even if for a brief moment, then we’ve connected.

This is an ongoing portrait class for beginners and seasoned oil painters. Students will not finish the portrait in one session. This is a portrait technique that takes time to finish – at least 4-6 smaller classes like this one. It also depends on how slow or fast the student paints. Each step of the process is explained and demonstrated. Students will learn an old master’s portrait technique with the emphasis on values and hues. It’s an exciting process that brings depth to the portrait. Once the student signs up, I will email them to approve the reference photo they want to use. I also help the student get the sketch on the canvas using several general rules of placement.

Watercolors, Acrylic, and Colored Pencils
I lived most of my life in the Midwest, just outside of Chicago. After retirement, I fulfilled my lifelong dream of living in Florida. I am a self-taught artist exploring a diverse range of subject matter and mediums. Presently, my medium of choice is watercolor batik, which is similar in process to traditional batik on fabrics. This process uses rice and mulberry papers with soy wax resist over layers of watercolor pigments which when completed results is vibrant color and texture, which is usually not achieved in watercolor art.
My art reflects Florida's beautiful beaches, tropical landscapes, and tropical flowers along with its wonderful wildlife. There is a lush, tropical vibe to Florida that I try to convey into my work by incorporating different mediums and vibrant colors to draw the viewer deeper into my art to make you feel something as well as bring enjoyment. Art is the visual soul of the artist who wishes to share a feeling, place or experience for which words cannot fully convey an emotion.
I am now accepting commissions from high-resolution photographs (sorry, I do not paint people). Please contact me at sandyl@slaprallart.com to review your commission.
I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoy creating it!

Nancy Hagood Daytona Beach Artist
My art is a journey into my subconscious where fleeting moments in time have been captured. Someone, somewhere, an emotion that has registered and is firmly rooted in my being. I start by doing quick marks in a raw and fundamental manner, with paint, paper and any other media which I feel a piece demands. I then allow the piece to take me on a voyage without a destination. In short it's like capturing a dream and transferring it for the viewer to observe.
"Sharing the soul through creativity is a great feeling and it happens every time one creates". (NC)
NC Hagood is an abstract artist, who works in acrylics and mixed media. Her pieces are powerful and have ethereal quality to them.
Hagood was born in Ecuador, South America. She arrived in New York City at the early age of five. Here she was influenced by her brother, an artist and the city itself. As she was growing up she would watch her brother in the studio, he was her first mentor. Hagood fell in love with art and her brother and the city provided much to ponder. She entered the legal field where she was exposed to very high and low emotions, this evolved in her desire to capture such in her art. Hagood studied with various mentors, and developed into a contemporary mixed media artist

Growing up in a small town in Kansas, I was exposed to numerous talented people during my youth. I started my own creative art path 1964 when I attended college in Ft. Hays, Ks. Later I would graduate from the University of Hawaii with a BFA is Visual Design/Photography and a minor in Art History.
My gypsy life style led to a colorful, exciting life of traveling and living in various beautiful places. While in Washington, D.C. I owned Fine Art Gallery for over 15 years before moving to Florida. For many years, I was a Street Artist participating in Fine Art Shows across the country where I am still known as the “Angel Lady” because of my photographs of Angels in old cemeteries.
Now I am experimenting with Pastels and find them extremely rewarding and expressive. It was a huge leap from capturing am image with a click and creating an image using pastels and paper. I still use my camera but in a different way now. I hope you enjoy all of my images, both past and present.

Mindy Colton Daytona Beach Sculpture
Award-winning Orlando, FL artist, Mindy Z. Colton, originally from New York City, was classically trained in all the traditional arts. She pursued a career in Graphic Design & illustration while still finding time for her fine art. Mindy eventually chose to leave behind her successful design career to follow her true passion as a full time fine artist. Her love of sculpture is where she has found her greatest artistic satisfaction, recognition and success. Involved with horses her entire life, she chose to combine her passion for both art and horses in her unique sculptural works.
Mindy’s journey in sculpture began with Bronze, which held a fascination for her. She was always intrigued with the process and solidity of the medium. But the limitations of the process and size led her to begin an exploration of other mediums. She has created monumental sculptures in marine grade aluminum and copper. She has mastered a number of natural materials and combinations to create her very unique sculptural mixed media horses. Her larger horses have carved tree limbs that she finds either on her property , o forest walks, or that have been cut for storm clearing. She carves off the bark and shapes each leg. She uses various fiber clays, metal rods, copper and aluminum wires, dried grape vines, shells, oriental papers, old maps, vintage postcards, paint, and many other materials in her mixed media works.
Mindy graduated with honors from the prestigious High School of Music & Art in New York City, and attended Parson’s School of Design, pursuing her passion in three-dimensional design. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University School of Fine Art in St. Louis, and an M.A. with Honors from the University of Central Florida. She spent an extended semester abroad in San Miguel de Allende ́. Colton’s award-winning fine art has been exhibited in numerous solo and two-person shows and more than 200 juried and group shows winning numerous awards including many Best in Shows.
Mindy is a three-time State of Florida Grantee and three-time United Arts of Central Florida Grant recipient. Two of these
grants were to create large-scale, outdoor sculptures. “Renewal,” a monumental sculpture exhibited at Epcot Invitational Flower & Garden Invitational Sculpture Exhibit, and at other outdoor sculpture competitions received a Best of Show, three People’s Choice Awards, and was purchased by the City of Casselberry, FL., Lake Concord Sculpture Park. “Wind Dancer,” a life-size Pegasus exhibited at Epcot Sculpture Invitational also, was purchased by the University of Central Florida Honors Col- lege. She is very proud that she was awarded three Purchase Awards at the Equine Art Exhibits in the Washington State Thoroughbred Foundation Equine Art Shows, and has two sculptures in the permanent collection of Emerald Downs Racetrack. Mindy’s sculptures have been exhibited in The Boca Raton Museum of Art, The Appleton Museum, Ocala, The Mennello Museum of American Art, Winter Park, FL, The American Association of Equine Art, Georgetown, KY, The Leepa-Rattner Museum, The Elliott Museum, Stuart, The International Museum of Art, EL Paso, TX, The Museum of Art, Deland, FL, The Pace Performing Arts Center, Parker, CO., The Westchester Arts Center, New York, The Polk Museum of Art Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit and more. Her monumental sculptures have been exhibited in juried Outdoor Sculpture exhibits all over Florida and Arts in Public Places programs.
Mindy lives on a small horse farm in Orlando. Her work is in museums, galleries, public and private collections across the United States, Canada, England, Russia, the Caribbean and Europe.

Amelie Bush Rogers Impressionism Oil Artist
As an award winning contemporary oil painter I attempt to emphasize the underlying concept of painting that has guided master painters for centuries. The classical use of multiple layers of transparent and semi-transparent glazes allows light to pass through to the canvas, producing a luminosity and depth not possible by applying one or two layers of opaque paint.
My color and subject selection lean toward impressionistic, yet also representational. I paint from memory, sketches, life and occasionally a photograph. Commissions give me the opportunity to bring dynamic color and mystery to a client's favorite photographs or memories.
My works include American, European and African landscapes and figures and are held in corporate and private collections throughout the US and abroad.
I teach The Landscape in Classical Oil at the Art League of Daytona Beach and work with children and young adults through Very Special Arts Florida.
I have been exhibiting work since age 17 when juried into the “Young Talent in Oklahoma”. My first one-person show was in 1976. Since then my work has appeared in shows and galleries from Florida to California.
In 2011 I was one of 77 nationally and internationally named to Best of American Oil Artists and Best of International Oil Artists.
Last century I graduated from the University of Oklahoma. I have happily resided in Daytona Beach for 20 years with my husband, 2 cats, a growing number of Koi and hundreds of orchids.
